Large-scale Agroforestry Systems

PENTAGRAMA develops and manages large scale agroforestry systems (AFSs) projects with high added value products and growing market demand. We offer projects with technical/financial feasibility, professional governance and reduced risks to investors, producers and distributors.

We have a portfolio of projects resulting from the accumulation of experiences already developed in several biomes and crops, with detailed financial modeling that demonstrates attractive investment return.

Our AFS model includes the use of developed and validated technologies, with the integration of mechanization, precision farming practices and digital technologies.

One of the great business opportunities that this model makes possible is the restoration of degraded areas of low commercial value with the regeneration of its productive capacity and consequent appreciation.

AFS Nut and Cocoa – Amazon Biome

We created bridges with the main actors in the production chain to make greater investments feasible and for SAFs to be relevant in the context of agribusiness and forest restoration
in the various Brazilian biomes.

OUR DIFFERENTIALS

  • More than 15 years’ experience in implementing and managing SAFs for different cultures from different chains and biomes, including developing the commercialization of products with higher added value (Instituto and Fazenda da Toca, Natura Inovação, FIP Florestal, Fazenda Amigos do Cerrado, Grupo Amazonia Acre, among others)

Toca P&D Institute and Farm

Natura Innovation

  • Proven know-how in the development of innovative and validated technologies and processes that include mechanization, for the different phases of implementation and management, to optimize resources, efficiency and qualification of the workforce.

SUCCESS CASE - Fazenda Amigos do Cerrado

Fazenda Amigos do Cerrado is the largest organic lemon producer in Brasilia and supplies to large supermarkets in the region, and from 2020 onwards to one of the largest restaurant chains in Brazil.

In five years we carried out the implantation and validation of a prototype for large scale AFS in the Cerrado Biome, its conversion to organic AFS, creation of a brand with SEBRAE support, certification and award in the Sustainable Initiatives Competition of Brasília Environmental office. This was made possible through the adaptation and transfer of technologies developed in previous experiences (Natura and Fazenda da Toca).

AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS (AFS)

“Production systems that combine trees, crops, pastures and / or animals. The composition of agricultural crops with trees guarantees production, profitability associated with socio-environmental benefits. ” (Melo, E. 2012)

It is a system of production and use of the soil that cultivates in space and time with the optimization of resources and areas:

Elements
Species
Importance
Evergreen
Arboreal or shrub, fruit, timber or fertilizer species Ability to capture deeper nutrients from the soil and provide medium and long-term income in the system
Semi-perennials
Species that remain in the system for two to three years being implanted at the beginning of the system Income generation in the short and medium term
Short cycle
Agricultural components Short-term income option
Optional
Animal component Income diversification

There are several possible arrangements:

  • Biodegradable agroforestry systems that approach the dynamics of a natural forest, reproducing processes such as natural succession, stratification and recycling of nutrients.
  • Agroforestry systems with a focus on production and financial profitability, with a smaller number of species that allows for a large scale, but which also use the forestry principles and processes that generate positive environmental and social impacts.

“A reference paradigm that allows to bridge the gap between production and conservation.” (Melo, E. 2012)

BENEFITS OF AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS *

  • Generate diversity of products at the same time or sequentially in the same production area;
  • Function as biological corridors of flora and fauna;
  • Store and capture large amounts of carbon representing an option to mitigate climate change;
  • Create a microclimate more suitable for crops, animal welfare and the human beings who manage it;
  • Protect soils from erosion and minimize the impacts of extreme weather events;
  • Ensure the recycling of nutrients from trees with agricultural crops with the improvement of soil fertility, especially with the use of legumes and plants with the function of fertilizers;
  • Generate greater balance between living organisms that allows better control of pests and diseases;
  • Contribute to less dependence on external inputs from the production unit;
  • Regulate hydrological cycles;
  • Contribute to the recovery of degraded and contaminated areas;
  • Encourage adaptations and mitigations in the context of climate change, situations of vulnerability of the productive unit and the territory according to the diversity and design of the AFS.

CONTRIBUTION OF AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS TO THE SDGs

“Agroforestry systems generate multi-solutions.” (Capra, F. 2016)

AFSs enhance positive impacts with a lasting and virtuous effect on production chains, which respond to the challenges of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
